Important Note About Close-Range Focus

The GoPro MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO use fixed-focus lenses, which may have limitations when photographing subjects at very close distances.

When shooting underwater through a dome port, the dome creates a virtual image of the underwater scene that appears closer to the camera than the actual subject. If this virtual image falls outside the camera’s effective focus range, the underwater portion of a split-level photo or video may appear soft or blurry, even when the above-water portion remains sharp.

For best results: Try to keep underwater subjects at a greater distance from the dome, particularly when taking close-up selfies or photographing nearby objects. Close-range sharpness may vary depending on the subject distance and shooting conditions.

Why does this happen with the MISSION 1?

The GoPro MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO use fixed-focus lenses, which may have difficulty focusing on subjects at very close distances. When shooting underwater through a dome port, refraction creates a virtual image of the underwater scene that appears much closer to the camera than the actual subject. If this virtual image falls outside the camera’s effective focus range, the underwater portion may appear blurry while the above-water portion remains sharp.

This effect is most noticeable when photographing nearby subjects, including underwater selfies. For best results, try to maintain a greater distance from underwater subjects. We are also investigating potential improvements to help achieve sharper close-range underwater images.
